- Cascades: 4 mile loop, 1.5hr hike + 1hr drive time from MLBS (round trip). The Cascades hike is not on MLBS property but is a favorite local destination. It is a 30 min drive to the parking lot (there is a small fee for parking) from the Station. We suggest hiking up to the falls by way of the Creekside Trail, which is ecologically interesting and botanically rich (takes about 1 - 1.5hr). Most folks hike down the Woodland Trail, a double wide path that is easier terrain (takes about 45min - 1hr). There are wide, flat boulders and and a large "swimming hole" at the base of this beautiful waterfall. Use caution if you choose to swim! Life guards are not present and the water is cold (even on the hottest days of summer) and deep.
- Mountain Lake Lodge Trails: Extensive trail network within walking distance of the Station. Park in the lot near the lodge's "Adventure Center" for easy access to some of the central trails, or ask staff at the lodge's Outfitters building for suggestions. The most popular overlook is Bald Knob, which offers excellent views of the New River Valley and large boulders to explore. It is most quickly accessed by starting near Outfitters, but you can also connect several other trails to make a nice, longer hike.
- War Spur: ~2.5 mile loop (including a spur trail to the lookout) in the Mountain Lake Wilderness (Jefferson National Forest). The spur trail leads to a lovely view from a small rock outcrop. A great picnic spot close to the Station. Drive 2 miles past the Station entrance and park in the pulloff area on the right.
- Wind Rock: A very short hike (~0.5 mile) to a rock outcrop with expansive mountain views. Located along the Appalachian Trail. Drive 4 miles past the Station entrance and park in the pulloff area on the left.
- Appalachian Trail: Hike to Georgia or Maine! Drive 4 miles past the Station entrance and park in the pulloff area on the left.
