- CHILD CARE PROVIDER needed for summer; part OR full-time M-F, 10-12 weeks (June - July every year). Two-three families hope to share child care for four or five children ages 1-10. Schedule is very flexible, so courses or other commitments might be accommodated. Applicant should be creative and adventuresome in planning daily activities, be willing to work (and play!) in a "rustic" but comfortable and beautiful environment, and be willing to spend a lot of time out of doors. The "Station" is a very friendly community of 60-100 scientists, teachers and students engaged in summer courses and biological research. Children typically spend their days playing on the large lawn, at the beach by the pond, and in the woods that surrounds it all. Not responsible for handling children's meals other than snacks (you'd have an hour off at lunch, and could eat in the cafeteria-style dining hall if you wished). No housework expected other than cleaning up after activities. Pay $8-11/hr depending on schedule and number of kids at a time. Occasional night and weekend flexibility is helpful but not required (extra pay for this). And while room and board are available on site, commuting has worked out in the past. MLBS is 30 minutes from Blacksburg. Must have own transportation.

- FIELD ASSISTANTS needed, 15 Apr - 15 Aug 2008 (flexible) to aid Dr. Ellen Ketterson in a study of the breeding biology of Dark-eyed Juncos at Mountain Lake Biological Station in SW Virginia. Responsibilities may include mist netting, blood sampling, nest finding, behavioral observation, GPS, and data entry. Applicants must be able to distinguish colored leg bands in the field, enjoy working outdoors (even in bad weather), be self-motivated, be able to work well with others, and be willing to do minor manipulative research with animals. Experience strongly preferred but not absolutely necessary. Transportation allowance, room, board, and stipend (amount dependent upon experience and level of funding for project) provided. The work is very rewarding if you are interested in animal behavior and like to be outdoors. Write to ERIC SNAJDR, Field Assistant Position, Department of Biology, Indiana University, 1001 E. 3rd St., Bloomington, IN, 47405 or email (preferred) esnajdr AT indiana.edu. Please include a summary of your background and your reasons for applying for this position, as well as the names and email addresses of 3 people who might evaluate your work or potential. Review of Applications will begin 1 Mar 2008, but applications will be accepted until positions are filled.
- FIELD ASSISTANTS and/or REU position available for a field study in the Black Hills National Forest of South Dakota starting roughly May 1 and running through the middle of July 2008 (dates somewhat flexible). The research aims to study the effects of environmental cues on the endocrinology and reproductive timing of Dark-eyed juncos. I will require two field assistants that will help with all the aspects of the work, including locating birds on their territories, finding nests, targeted and passive mist-netting, bird measuring and blood sampling, nest monitoring, behavioral observations, and various other activities related to field experiments on birds. Crew members will be also be responsible for keeping detailed field notes, as well as completing some lab work and data entry associated with progress in the field.
Applicants with progress toward a degree in the life sciences will have an advantage, as well as those with field experience in finding nests, mist-netting, and bird handling. However, motivation is a primary consideration: the work is hard and demanding, may take place in changing weather and requires long hours at times. Field assistants will be expected to work 6 days per week, have the ability to work both independently and cooperatively, be self-motivated and demonstrate a willingness to learn new skills, and be willing to do minor manipulative research with animals. The work is very rewarding if you are interested in animal behavior and like to be outdoors. Housing will be provided, and a stipend will be available to cover living expenses and transportation. An independent research opportunity (Research Experience for Undergraduates), including possible publication as well as additional funding may be available for a particularly promising undergraduate applicant. Write to Christy Bergeon, Department of Biology, Indiana University, 1001 E. 3rd St., Bloomington, IN, 47405 or email (preferred) cbergeon AT indiana.edu. Please include a summary of your background and your reasons for applying for this position, as well as the names and email addresses of 2-3 people who might evaluate your work or potential.
