Housing or work life concerns or constraints (e.g. allergies, disabilities, etc.). Please be sure to list any medical condition or allergy that may require medication or other treatment during your stay at the Station.

Please consider these specific questions, or related issues:

  • Are you colorblind, hearing impaired, or have other constraints that might make it difficult to identify animals at a distance, or perform fine scale operations under field conditions?
  • Do you have any allergies or medical conditions that would prevent you from participating in long hours of field work?
  • Are you willing to handle and manipulate animals (ex. small mammals, amphibians, reptiles, adult and nestling birds)?  This may include banding, taking measurements, taking blood samples, and potentially administering injections.

If you have been to Mountain Lake Biological Station before, when? And in what capacity?

Program Application:

Eligibility and Expectations: To be eligible you must be returning to an undergraduate degree program in the fall following the REU program. If you graduate in May or June in the year of the program, you are NOT eligible. To be eligible you must also be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident. In addition, as an REU researcher you are expected to be in residence at the Station for the full ten weeks of the program. Special scheduling needs can often be accommodated if noted in this application. Field biologists often work long and irregular hours six or seven days a week. REU program participants must agree to the same. Short trips away from the Station are often no problem with permission of your research mentor and the REU Coordinator. Commuting is not permitted. It is also important to consider that field work is often physically strenuous and demanding. Program participants need to be physically fit and willing to embrace physical labor, demanding hiking, and long hours in the field in all weather conditions.
IMPORTANT - Check this box to certify that you understand, meet, and agree to, these criteria and expectations:

Participant Support:
Program participants will receive a stipend by check in two installments over the summer. All room, board, and group insurance fees will be paid directly by the program. Travel and project expense support is also available.

Please make sure all fields below are completed and application submitted by the application deadline. Incomplete applications can not be considered.

1) Essay:
Please prepare a carefully written one-page essay (600 word limit) that describes
a) the experiences that qualify you for this research internship; please discuss any other research experiences you've had, and what you got out of them
b) your interests and professional goals
c) what you hope to achieve by spending the summer at Mountain Lake.
Paste text into this field:

2) Recommendation:
Please request a reference from one research mentor, academic advisor, or science instructor who knows you and your potential for research well. Nonacademic or "community" referees (e.g. coaches, religious leaders) are much less valuable. The recommendation should be completed on-line. Please provide your referee with the web address www.mlbs.virginia.edu/reuappform/reurefform/reuref.html . Please remember to check with your referee around March 1 to make sure the recommendation has been submitted.
Name and e-mail address of your referee:
Agreement respecting confidentiality: I waive / I do not waive my right of access to this recommendation form under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy act of 1974 (http://www.ed.gov/offices/OM/fpco/ferpa/). I understand that the recommendation form will be used by MLBS solely in its procedures relating to program admission. If this box is checked I waive access to information submitted by my referee:

3) Course Information:

Please enter your overall GPA and your major GPA if available.

What undergraduate courses have you taken that you feel ESPECIALLY add to your preparedness for an REU at Mountain Lake? Choose your most advanced biology or field-oriented courses that focused on ecology, evolution, or other area.
List course names, grades, and where taken (on campus? field station? abroad?). Please do not paste in your entire transcript.
