Abstract: Previous studies have shown that habitat selection made by D. fuscus can be influenced by the presence of D. monticola . Theories suggest that this behavior is a defense mechanism to avoid the preferred habitat of D. monticola and that other substrate provide no benefits. In this study I asked whether different cover types impacted survivorship of D. fuscus in the presence of D. monticola. D. fuscus were placed in experimental streams with D. monticola to observe predation. A field study was also conducted to examine habitat selection trends among D. fuscus and D. monticola . All research was conducted during a three week span. Experimentation showed that substrate had no impact on survivorship, but the field study yielded significant results that habitat selection of D. fuscus and D. monticola was indeed correlated with the location along the stream.
